Joliet, IL – PeopleFirstBank, has established a benefit fund for victims of the November 17 the tornado activity in Illinois. “Funds collected will be directed to Habitat for Humanity of Will County’s relief efforts.” Mr. Erik Schelling commented.  Mr. Schelling is a Vice President and the Community Reinvestment Officer for PeopleFirstBank.  Donations may be made at both PeopleFirstBank locations, which are 3100 Theodore St. in Joliet and 1226 W. Jefferson St. in Shorewood.  Checks can be made payable to “PeopleFirstBank for benefit of 11/17/13 Relief Fund” and mailed to PeopleFirstBank, 3100 Theodore St., Joliet, IL 60435.  For more information, you can also call the bank at 815-207-6200.

Shepherd of Peace Lutheran Church (1180 W. First Street, Braidwood, IL): We will be hosting a free luncheon on Monday (11/18) for those in need, starting at 12:00. The church is located on the east side of I-55, just up the frontage road from Marathon. Also at that time we will be offering babysitting during the afternoon for anyone who might need a safe place for their children while they work on clean-up. You are all in our prayers. From Nick Doerfler, spokesman for the Coal City Fire Protection District: Those wishing to volunteer to help are asked to go to Coal City High School. Clean up has begun and D Construction of Coal City and Heartland Disposal have brought out dumpsters.

If you find photos and documents--other people's important papers--in your yard, you can mail or drop them off at the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, 909 Liberty Street, Morris, IL 60450, during business hours Monday - Friday, and they will assist with categorizing and having a place people can go to to try to find their items. The items delivered to the Grundy County Chamber will be transported by volunteers to a Tazewell County rally point where residents can come pick them up - volunteers are working on both ends to reunite these items.

Centrue Bank in Coal City to hold blood drive TODAY. By coincidence, they have a blood drive scheduled for TODAY, 11/18/13 from 2-6pm. Heartland Blood Center will be on hand and they provide blood for hospitals in the Joliet and Morris area among others. Right now, they are critically low on several types. To donate, you can go to Centrue Bank at 660 S. Broadway in Coal City. For more info, call Josh at 815-634-2131.

PLAINFIELD

The "Helping Hugs" effort is collecting items to help victims of Sunday's deadly tornadoes in Illinois. After sweeping through central Illinois, the storms hit the suburban Chicago area, causing damage and knocking out power in Frankfort, New Lenox, Tinley Park, Flossmoor, Homewood, Coal City and Joliet. 

Elizabeth Hug said volunteers plan to deliver items to areas hit by the devastating storms on Wednesday. Donations can be dropped off from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 24022 W. Lockport St. (use Illinois Street entrance). 

The Hugs are collecting the following items:

  • sweatshirts
  • gloves 
  • coats
  • socks
  • hats (no other clothing items at this time)
  • blankets
  • bottled water
  • non perishable food items
  • snacks
  • non electric can openers
  • shampoo
  • conditioner
  • body soap (travel/hotel size as well as full size)
  • toothbrushes
  • toothpaste
  • small stuffed animals
  • gift cards to Walmart or Target
  • gift cards to fast food restaurants-McDonald's, Taco Bell, Burger King, etc.

This group also helps local people who have had fires or other disasters in there home in the Plainfield/Joliet area.
