Gerard Way‘s The Umbrella Academy Netflix series has added a big name to its cast: Mary J. Blige.
The Oscar-nominated actress and musician will play a character named Cha-Cha on the live-action show, which is based on the comic book series written by the My Chemical Romance frontman. A press release describes Cha-Cha as a “ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets.”
Way debuted The Umbrella Academy comic in 2007. The story follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes who must come together to solve the mystery of their father’s murder.
The Umbrella Academy series is set to premiere sometime this year.
Blige is up for two Oscars this year: Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Netflix film Mudbound, and Best Original Song for her track “Mighty River.” The 90th Annual Academy Awards air March 4 on ABC.
