• While many people are looking forward to Christmas, a number of Chicago residents can’t wait for it to be over. That’s because recreational marijuana becomes legal in Illinois starting January 1st.
  • As the anticipation builds, eager residents have been flooding the mayor’s office and police stations with questions about the new law, Mayor Lori Lightfoot says. Most of the questions are related to the law that prohibits smoking weed in a public place, which many have interpreted as meaning they could be arrested for smoking in their own backyards, she says.
  • Hoping to clear up the matter, Lightfoot on Thursday released a joint statement with Police Superintendent Charlie Beck that says it’s OK for residents to smoke marijuana “in their own backyard or balcony” because it “poses no direct threat to public safety. Any characterization to the contrary is simply wrong.”
  • How do you think legalized weed will affect Chicago’s violence problem?
