    FDA worrisome sunscreen research

    May 6, 2019 3:30PM CDT
    Share

    • To lather or not to lather, apparently that’s now a question.
    • According to a new government study, several active ingredients used in popular sunscreens are absorbed into the bloodstream just minutes after application. So, what does that mean? According to FDA researchers, they don’t know.
    • They’ve determined that higher levels of the chemicals are absorbed, as much as 40 times more, but they don’t yet know the impacts. And the absorbed levels were were still under the threshold to trigger safety testing.
    • For those who don’t want to get burned by this news – experts say you can try alternative ways of protecting your skin. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have been deemed safe. Protective clothing is also a good option.
    • Do you regularly use sunscreen when out in the summer sun? Do you prefer to use protective clothes?
