Recent shootings show new mantra in action

    • We were once told to run or shelter in place in the event of an active shooter. That was before ‘Columbine.’ In the new dawn, “run, hide, fight,” is the new mantra, CNN reports.
    • It was certainly on display during two of the most recent school shootings. Tuesday afternoon, in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo was killed as he charged the shooter. Two other classmates also sprang to action to subdue him. Others tried to apply pressure to Castillo’s wound. Eight were injured. Castillo was the only fatality.
    • A week earlier, at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, 21-year-old Riley Howell laid down his life as he knocked the assailant off his feet. Both Howell and Castillo are being remembered for their heroism.
    • Do you think about what you would do if faced with an active shooter event? Has your mental preparation caused to you view your surroundings differently? Have you taken any defense courses?
